Make Your Own Guitar

Australian Guitar Making School – Brisbane West

Make Your Own Guitar

A first for Queensland, the Australian Guitar Making School Brisbane West was initiated in August 2014 providing you with an opportunity to design and make a high quality acoustic guitar. Regardless of woodworking or playing ability you will learn how to make your own guitar from scratch in a purpose built and fully equipped workshop.

Expert guidance is provided every step of the way and class sizes are kept small to assure you get the attention you require.  Adult (16 and older) men and women of any experience level may participate in classes; there are no prerequisite skill levels and all are catered for. While it is wonderful to be able to play an instrument that you’ve made yourself, it is not necessary to be a guitarist to make one and non-guitarists are encouraged. Classes are run on a weekly basis with a mix of evening and daytime classes available. Class duration is 4 hours and the maximum class size is 5 students.  The time taken to complete a guitar depends on a number of factors including the existing woodworking skills of the student, their preferred pace of working and the complexity of the guitar that they choose to build. Thirty to forty weekly sessions is typical.

The School teaches guitar making with an emphasis on use of hand tools with only limited need for power tools.  The workshop is fully equipped with all of the tools and equipment required and each student has exclusive use of a workbench during the class.

Students may make any style of acoustic guitar or guitar-like instrument (e.g. ukuleles) within certain limits.  We do not use pre-packaged kits nor do we rely on the more common designs used in the majority of production line guitars.  The School has several highly successful designs for common styles including classical, flamenco, steel string and ukulele.  However a student may propose any style of instrument subject to discussion with and agreement of the instructor. Students of the AGMS produce very high quality instruments of which they can be rightfully proud and that will last for many years.  As such they are provided with access to high quality tone woods obtained predominantly from Australian sources. Other materials such as tuners, truss rods, frets, nuts and saddles are also supplied by the School.
