Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of frequently asked questions that we hear. If you have some more questions you would like answered then simply let us know via our contact form here.

The following questions are in no particular order.

How easy is it to build a guitar and do I need any prior experience?

Well, the short answer is, It’s easier than you think and no prior experience is required.

The Brisbane Guitar Making School has helped many people who have never picked up a hammer or chisel and don’t know the first thing about woodworking to build all styles of guitars. You don’t need to know woodworking to make a guitar at BGMS, you just need to have the passion to try.  We will step you through the process.

How much does it cost to build a guitar?

This is not an easy answer for two reasons. 1. The timbers and other materials you select will affect the cost and; 2. The time it takes for you to finish a guitar is directly related to the effort you place into the build, so you have two big variables. In saying all that, most people can build an acoustic guitar over 6 to 9 months attending weekly classes and typically pay $4,000 to $5,000 for the experience of a lifetime and a personally crafted guitar.  Electric guitars are usually less than this starting from around $2,600.  Each 4-hour class costs $121 (subject to various discounts); materials and parts are additional.

We also offer our Select Series guitars for a fixed price with the design and all materials pre-selected.  Current pricing for Select Series acoustic guitars is $3,700, Select Series Solidbody electric guitars are $2,600 and the Little Wing travel guitar is $1,800. How is the program structured and how long does it take to build a guitar?

We offer weekly classes 4 hours in duration with a choice of morning and evening times.  Students generally come once a week to the same class.  There is always an interesting mix of guitars underway at various stages of the build.

We also offer a limited number of casual classes for those who can’t make it to a regular weekly class and 1:1 online video lessons if you’re remote or working in your own workshop.  Click here to see if this might work for you.

The time taken depends on several factors.  Everyone works at their own pace on the guitar they choose to make.  So your skills and capability play a role along with the complexity of the guitar you choose to make.  You will have the support of experienced luthiers (instructors) to achieve your build.  So build times vary.

At this time we do not offer intensive/full-time courses as a standard offering however please call us if this is something you are interested in.

Which timbers are the best to build a guitar with?

This is another hard question – there really is no “best” wood for making a guitar.  We offer a range of excellent woods sourced predominantly from Australia. For a first guitar, we recommend using good quality wood that has been selected for guitar making.  The variation in sound comes from not only the timber but the build process and of course the style of guitar. Timbers, predominantly the soundboard, will have an effect but little compared to the type of guitar and build style. We have a whole page dedicated to timbers and the effect on the sound here.  Have a read.

How much help will I receive when building a guitar?

The Brisbane Guitar Making School will support you the whole way through the process and you can have comfort in knowing that we guarantee that as long as you work towards the end goal we will ensure you succeed. Each class has between 3 to 5 students with a minimum of 1 instructor per session. As there are many different parts to a guitar build you will often find everyone working on different sections of their guitar and therefore the instructor can support each person individually. The short answer is “Lots of help”
